Haptic rehabilitation exercises performance evaluation using automated inference systems

چکیده
Stroke has been a major source of disability that strikes humans in different age, causing chronic disability in adults. A common type of this disability is hand stroke which deprives patients from controlling their hands and fingers. Rehabilitation of stroke is usually done by functional Occupational Therapy (OT) in which the patient is trained to perform everyday exercises. On the other hand, haptics and virtual environments research offer the opportunity to improve the traditional methods of therapy. During a certain rehabilitation exercise, at least one therapist has to subjectively monitor the patient's performance in order to assess his/her improvement. This paper aims to introduce an automated Inference System that utilizes haptic data to quantize the patient's performance. For this purpose, two systems were implemented: a Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). The two systems were validated with sample input/output datasets. However, when testing them with real subjects' data, they gave irrational evaluations. Retracing the whole process has lead us to the conclusion that the CyberForce system is incapable of providing normative data for evaluating the patient performance due to calibration and consistency issues.

A PC-based orthopedic rehabilitation system was developed for use at home, while allowing for remote monitoring from the clinic. The home rehabilitation station has a Pentium II PC with graphics accelerator, Polhemus tracker, and a novel Multipurpose Haptic Control Interface with its own Pentium board. This interface is used to sample patient's hand positions and to provide resistive forces usi...
متن کاملIncreasing Patient Engagement in Rehabilitation Exercises Using Computer-Based Citizen Science
Patient motivation is an important factor to consider when developing rehabilitation programs. Here, we explore the effectiveness of active participation in web-based citizen science activities as a means of increasing participant engagement in rehabilitation exercises, through the use of a low-cost haptic joystick interfaced with a laptop computer. Using the joystick, patients navigate a virtu...

As Haptic devices become more affordable and economical, research in Haptic-based virtual rehabilitation systems is gaining more interest. In addition to the benefits provided by virtual rehabilitation, Haptics offer force and tactile feedback which can be crucial for much upper and lower extremity rehabilitation. In this paper, we present such a system that provides a rich media environment fo...

Introduction: A variety of (deliberate or inaccurate) errors in drug rehabilitation clinics may occur due to use of addictive drugs. Automated drug distribution systems play a significant role in reducing drug medication errors. Method: Firstly, according to the addiction rehabilitation centers requests, the design and construction of the device was performed. The prototype systems were examin...
متن کاملApplication-Based Evaluation of Haptic Interfaces
A taxonomy of haptic modes is proposed as a basis for evaluating haptic interfaces. Haptic modes are defined as distinct styles of using haptic perception for purposeful activity. An evaluation method that exercises a single haptic mode tests the hardware and software of the interface on a task that has a clear relationship to actual applications. To demonstrate this approach to evaluation, the...
